Bell Bay Aluminium  is part of the Rio Tinto Group, a global leader in aluminium, one of the world’s most widely used metals.

Based approximately 50 kilometres from Launceston in Northern Tasmania, the smelter commenced production in 1955 and was the first aluminium smelter built in the southern hemisphere. Bell Bay Aluminium is seeking applications for a new Specialist Process Safety role.

The purpose of the Specialist Process Safety role is to improve the inherent operability and integrity of assets and processes through the identification and improved understanding of the critical equipment, procedures and practices. 

The key tasks of the role include:

  • Maintain and promote high standards in the areas of health, safety, risk assessment and risk management
  • Perform audits of machinery, safety equipment and management programs to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure safety compliance to regulations and standards
  • Participate in process safety incident investigations, including root cause analysis
  • Develop and maintain a site process safety hazard risk register
  • Solve complex risk and safety design issues

You will have the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in an Engineering or Applied Science discipline
  • A demonstrated commitment to safety
  • Experience in process safety management preferably in a high risk work environment
  • Sound knowledge of risk management, risk assessments and their application
  • Exposure to a range of control system hardware and software products
  • Ability and willingness to coach others in process safety
